Olmos Park, Texas
This 1929 Spanish-eclectic residence in Olmos Park is the forever home to a couple with evolving needs. After years of small modifications, they decided it was time to invest in a comprehensive remodel that’d return the house to its roots.
First challenged by a simple lack of storage and inadequate lighting, they called on our team to enhance functionality. In the kitchen, a complete reconfiguration optimizes the flow around an efficient cookline and drawers defined for each utensil, spice, and coffee grinder. A laundry room with integrated ironing boards and folding tables. And the main suite’s confined bathroom was gutted to the studs to reveal original stained glass windows, just off center enough to play into the home’s eclectic nature.
While respectful to the home’s historic proportions and structure, this redesign also implements contemporary details and fixtures that reflect the owners’ taste. Sleek brass hardware marries with lively floral wallpaper. Aegean blue cabinets surround travertine counters. The result is an appropriate combination of Mediterranean influence and modern style.
The design of the new windows and French doors takes inspiration from existing 5-point arches, a geometry that the team recalculated and transcribed into full size mockups for a local millworker. The expansive custom door to the covered porch is fitted with operable sidelites, allowing a seamless, breezy connection to their lush backyard.
“My wife and I had been imagining a major renovation of our nearly 100-year old home for several years, and we interviewed multiple architects. Card & Co. were different than the others from our very first meeting, primarily in the close way they really listened to us, asked great questions, and sought to understand our vision, objectives, and concerns.
We were working with them days after that first meeting, and today, at the end of the project, we are thankful that we were patient and found Jonathan and Marc...they have delivered our dream home that fully honors the legacy of the property while incorporating all of the technology and lifestyle adaptations that we want in modern living.”
